Gordes (25 mins drive)
This beautiful village is perched on the Vaucluse Mountains. It is dominated by the 16th century Chateau above almond trees. In season it is very busy on market day. Choice of a high standard of restaurants.
Bories (30 mins drive)
Just south of Gordes a bizarre, primitive habitat. Bories are small beehive shaped huts built of overlapping dry stones, which a craftsman can assemble without tools. This construction technique is thought to date back to Neolithic times and they were inhabited from the 16th to early 20th centuries.
L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (40 mins drive)
This town has a watery heritage; the marshlands were drained to construct the canals found around the town. The waters of the Sorgue river used to provide the power needed for the silk industry, you'll spot some water wheels. It is famous as a centre for antiques of which there are many.
Avignon (1 hour drive)
This town is a warren of medieval alleyways with a good range of French and international shops. The colossal Palais des Papes is at its heart, where seven exiled Popes fled from Rome when it was an important religious centre in 13th century. Take a stroll to the remaining part of the famous medieval Pont d'Avignon bridge, a UNESCO World Hertitage Site.
Aix-on- Provence (1 hour drive)
This delightful city was once the capital of Provence and is today a blend of old and new. The Cours Mirabeau is the central boulevard, planted with plane trees, much like a toned-down Champs Elysees. It is known as the city with a thousand fountains, yes there are many including a hot spring fountain covered in moss.
